I’m a huge advocate of natural and eco friendly products, so of course I use organic makeup. But, as you know, it’s pretty hard to come by quality natural makeup that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg – if you can even find it locally to buy. Finding  local businesses to purchase from are sometimes limited – so I occassionally try out new products I find online.

I think it is really important to now that whatever you put on your skin goes directly to your liver. As your skin is the largest organ in the body (on, rather), you should really care about what goes on it. This includes toxins and petroleum by-products (known carcinogens) that are typically found in all beauty products today – unless they are organic. Products that are organic are not permitted, by law, to have synthetic ingredients.

There are two types of “natural makeup” available today. Natural makeup is product made from natural ingredients – these ingredients have not been chemically altered. Whereas organic and mineral makeup uses ingredients that are grown without synthetic chemicals, sewage sludge or GMO’s (genetically modified organisms).

There are a few main common ingredients you see in typical non-organic and/or natural makeup products that you can check for. If you see these ingredients, do NOT buy the product.

  • Mercury
  • Dioxane
  • Nitrosamines
  • Alcohol, Isopropyl
  • DEA
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Polyethylene Glycol

Another common ingredient to avoid is Parabens – synthetic preservatives found in most beauty products.

  • methylparaben
  • ethylparaben
  • propylparaben
  • butylparaben
  • isobutylparaben

When choosing organic or natural makeup, you really are doing yourself a favor – a very healthy choice. Be sure to do some research on the product you are considering, check the ingredient list and even ask around your circle of friends to see who’s already tried which product. Buying organic makeup can be more expensive than traditional drug store brands, but your health is worth it!
