Fashion for Every Body Type Defined

Dressing for success, whether in the business or professional world, hinges on knowing your body type and how to dress it to its best advantage. Women generally fall in to one of four different body types. These four body types translate to four different shapes. All women are unique in their body type, but knowing which category you fall in to will give you a head start on filling your wardrobe with clothes that flatter you and all your beautiful uniqueness. These four shapes are classified as apple, pear, hourglass and rectangle. Once you determine which shape most closely fits your body, then you are ready to learn what styles you should lean towards and which ones you need to stay away from.
A woman with an apple shaped body would probably point to her midsection as the place she wants to camouflage and hide. These body types tend to be round around the middle with broader shoulders. But these women usually have legs to be proud of, so don’t be afraid to show your assets. Tunics with short skirts will look fabulous on you as the simple, full tunic top masks any tummy trouble while the hemline shows of the legs. For other options on tops that will look good, gravitate to the empire or high-waisted styles. To give the illusion of a smaller waistline, look for wrap style tops, or jackets that are cinched in at the waist, with plenty of structure.
If you have the pear or triangle body shape, you will want to bring your audiences’ attention to the top half of your body. Put your splashes of color and light solids on top and use darker bottoms to balance your shape. Try to find tops with wide or scoop cut necks. This widens your shoulders which will balance your hips. If you wear suits and jackets, keep the cut of the jacket right to the top of the hip. Use boot-cut bottoms or A-line skirts to flatter your bottom half.
For the hourglass body shapes, you will want to draw attention to the natural curve of your body. This is achievable with styles that show off your waist. Try to purchase clothing with a defined waist. Wrap dresses are definitely your friend here. Don’t go with the low-rise, instead opt for a higher waisted pant or skirt. To create a longer line, try a top with a dominate V-cut neckline.
If you fall into the rectangular body shape category, then you have a very slender build to your body. You will want to create the illusion of curves with your clothing choices. Lean towards jackets with cinched waists and tops with necklines that are scooped or cut in to a V. Low rise and flared jeans will help define some thighs (and count your blessings that you need to work on defined thighs!). You are one of the lucky body types that really look good in a layered look. Don’t go bulky, but a slender body can support more clothes without adding unwanted proportions. Layer colors and patterns to break up the straight look for your body.
