Hairstyles for women over 40 wishing to change does have its obstacles but the first obstacle to overcome – providing you want to change, of course – is the perfectly natural fear that you may never look the same again. What if I don’t like my new hair style you may think or what if my new hairstyle does not suit me or how can I get my old style back?

This sort of panicking is natural but unfounded. Hairstyles for women over 40 are no more than a series of variations on a simple theme – and it may surprise you to learn that I believe there are actually only nine alternatives. The various patterns can of course be mixed to produce hundreds of different effects, but there are only nine basic cuts, all of which can be grown out or re-styled fairly quickly. So never be afraid of changing your hairstyle.

The only really drastic step as far as changing styles for a women in her forties and older is concerned, is when someone with very long hair decides to have it all cut off. Apart from amazing your friends by having your hair tinted an outlandish color or turning up with a mass of curls when the day before you had completely straight hair, nothing is more dramatic than cutting off ten or twenty years of hair growth, because it will take a long , long time to grow back to that length again.

So think about your decision carefully. If your young you’ll find the decision harder. Your long hair probably suits you and time seems to pass much more slowly and you cannot imagine ever having the patience to wait for it to grow again. If, however, you’ve reached an age when long hair is actually making you look older than you are then it’s time to think about facing those scissors!

As we get older and develop character lines around the face – particularly around the eyes and mouth – long hair tends to emphasise the downward trend of these lines and exaggerate our age. It is for this reason that hairstyles for older women are often shorter and colored with highlights to take the emphasis away from the face.

You can only get away with long hairstyles after a certain age if you can afford to spend a lot of time and a considerable amount of money on your hair. It’s all very well for models and celebrities to wear their hair longer but they have hair stylists at their beck and call. Women in their forties do not have this luxury unless they are very lucky.

So hairstyles decisions for 40+ women wishing to change can not be entered into lightly. Get as much advice as you can from your hairdresser, make sure you have identified your hair type accurately, choose a hairstyle that will work, make sure that you have the right information about caring for your new hair style and remember – the cutting off as a relatively minor event, It’s choosing the right hair style for your new, short hair that is the major one.

We absolutely love talking about hair styles when it comes to making a fashion statement. The most common questions I have been asked has formed my website. The site is packed with information dealing with all aspects of haircuts for women providing up to date information and resources.

An updo is simply arranging the hair in a bun or a pony tail instead of letting it hang freely around the face. These days updos are no longer the formal stiff looking buns and knots that women used to fashion during proms, weddings or other formal occasion. Instead modern updos are more soft, sexy and feminine. Modern updos can now be done quickly and can be worn during any occasion, making an easy DIY updo accessible to any woman.

For the modern woman an updo is not just a fashion statement, it is a must. Mothers and career women feel that they can move around more freely when not constricted by long hair. The updo is not just for straight haired women, they are also for the curly haired. Doing your hair does not have to necessarily mean an expensive trip to the hair salon or the stylists’. It can be done cheaply and in a short time right in your own home.

For the most basic updo, you can just tie your hair in a pony tail and be done with it. Another way to do a basic updo is to gather your hair in one hand and raise it behind your neck. Pull your hair into a twist and secure the twisted hair with hair pins or those specially designed hair-claws. Let the ends hang freely. To add more style, pull some hair out from the side of your face and let them frame your face. By allowing some wisps of your hair to fall freely, your updo is softer and more feminine. You don’t have to worry about your hair being messy despite the clips and hair pins. Most celebrities wear their updos in this messy style. This casual hairstyle can be worn not only at home or at work but can be worn during any event.

For my personal updo, which I wear everyday at home and when I go out. I wash my hair and apply conditioner. I towel dry my hair and if I don’t need to go out I don’t use blow dryers instead opting to have my hair dry naturally. When my hair is finally dry I put on some leave on conditioner or hair gloss. Since I have black hair these products will make my hair shinier. I put on a head band to keep the hair out of my eyes. I usually choose those elastic kinds with colorful patterns. After I secure my head band, I gather the rest of my hair at the back of my neck and depending on my mood I usually secure my hair low, just at my nape, or when I am going out for a night in town with my friends or have to go to a business meeting I secure it in a pony tail high on my head. My hair is shoulder length so instead of finishing the pony tail, and pulling the hair out all the way out the scrunchie, I let a small bun form and arrange the hair I have pulled out to cover the bun and scrunchie. This style is casual and messy but it can be worn to formal occasions too.

The updo is a very versatile hairstyles, so you can personalize it to suit your needs, mood or the event you have to attend. You can try accessorizing your updo with barrettes, hair clips or bobby pins. You can also try curling those loose tendrils with a curling iron if you have straight hair to add variety and style to your updo. A casual messy updo is the best look for any occasion. It is easy and fun to do. This look is easy on the budget too.

Pushed into the spotlight by the popularity of Sarah Palin (or notoriety of Tina Fey), long hairstyles are making a big comeback!

Long hairstyles have long been a favorite of the young-at-heart as well the jet-set and glamour girls. Whether curly or straight or layered into a shag haircut, long hairstyles exude confidence and up-to-date style. Let’s look at several latest trends for the best look with long hair.

Long Hair Updo

Whether you’re a supporter or not, you can’t argue that Sarah Palin has brought back the business casual, long hair Updo. In the past two months there has been a resurgence of the once popular style. Popularized by its sophisticated and versatile look, the long hair Updo works well with eyebrow length bangs as well as a pull-back and over the ears.

Its versatility comes from the non-nonsense business look when pulled-back with the ponytail folded over or under, as well as the more casual appearance when the ponytail is allowed to hang down.

The greatest versatility of the long hair Updo comes from the classic iconic “let your hair down” option at the end of the day. It allows a transition from business to casual a snap while making curly or straight designs work. As an added bonus, the long hair Updo cools you off during the summer or warmer months. Having hair long enough to give you this flexibility can be a welcome relief on a hot day in a suit!

If you are looking for the “I’m a Governor” or business executive look and want the Family-oriented casual look flexibility, a long hairstyle with a Updo is the perfect look for you.

The Long Curly or Straightened Look

This weekend at our son’s Lacrosse game I overheard a conversation between my wife and a close friend. This friend’s son has one heck of a head of hair – curly hair…very curly hair in big waves. She commented that if she didn’t straighten her hair with hair products or use a flat iron, her hair looked the same – big and curly.

Now, if you didn’t know her, this is hard to picture, but she has long (below the shoulder blades) straight and beautifully colored hair.

She has taken a long hairstyle and layered it with the first layer brushing her shoulders and bangs that extend below the ears. This gives her substantial versatility and a range of looks for her long, curly hair.

One, for a casual look she pulls her bangs behind her ears and has the perfect combination of a sorority/soccer mom look – young and playful. With the bangs long enough, she can pull them straight back and pin with a clip, scrunci’ or beret. This gives her the business look she is after at PTA meetings and the hair style looks great.

Though rarely done, she can leave the hair natural and get a great long, curly look. Albeit she takes care to use hair products – leave-in conditioners and moisturizing shampoos – to avoid tangles and the “bird nest” look all too common when long curly hair is left unchecked.

Long hairstyles trends are coming back – fast! They are sophisticated and can give you great versatility and fashion options. Curly or straight, thick or thin, long hair can be beautiful and right for any occasion or personality.
