Acai Berry – The Super Food
Posted on January 27, 2009 by Kate
The Acai berry is not a new product at all – it’s been part of the Brazilian staple diet for a very long time. In the Amazon, the acai palm makes up a major component of diet – 42% of consumed food (by weight). Acai berries are used in juices, wine, smoothies, sodas and other beverages – sometimes mixed with other friuts. Brazilians also use the berries to flavor ice cream or mixed with granola for energy.
More recently, the acai berry has been recommended as a weight loss aid. The fruit is loaded with anti-oxidents and reportedly boosts energy. This is no magic fruit and won’t miraculously make you slim, but it is often used to help with weight loss. The acai berry is considered a “super food.” Due to the amount of fiber and protien, fiber and omega fatty acids, you could replace a substantial amount of food you consume on a daily basis with a solid diet of acai berry.
Most important to note is that the acai berry is a fragile fruit that is only grown in the Amazon forests. As it cannot be grown in North America, getting a high quality acai berry product can be a challenge. All forms of acai berry found in North America tend to vary in potency from product to product. In the USA, this fruit is not FDA approved – though many American manufacturers are, the acai berry itself is not. And that’s fine, it takes the Amazon forest’s unique climate to grow this super food. Just be aware that though the products you buy in North America are safe, they do vary in potency.
